French director Julie Gavras neatly side-steps the cliches of 70s radicalism with her terrific debut. Nine year-old goody-two-shoes Anna (Nina Kervel-Bey) is outraged by her parents' newly acquired political activism and Gavras's camera brings us down to angry little Anna's level as she approaches her new life with lovely literalness. Who is this Fidel Castro, and what of his communists? Anna patches together an impression of men with red beards who steal toys. Gavras, the daughter of cinema royalty (leftwing director Costa-Gavras) is also a child of the 1970s - but doesn't have a political agenda and instead chooses to cast a watchful gaze over the mood of the time, the tussle between the old ways and new.
